Post-modern, but not future-tech. Something drastic happened to the world killing masses of humans, but not nearly enough to make us endangered.
As the human race continuing experimenting and trying to become more advanced, both as a race and with their technology, scientists stumbled upon something that should have been left alone. This "Pandora's Box" was their answer for everything, containing an alien technology that could be traced back to before recorded time. Unfortunately, the scientists misused the box's 'gift', creating things that caused the humans to grow fatter and lazier.
The technology that was found was aware of everything that happened, being a biotechnical being, and turned against them. Any who could afford the technologies of the time were destroyed for their sins. The Biotechnological beings had evolved from before the time of their landing, making them smarter than humans could ever wish to be.
Now the world has had to revert back to a less advanced race, similar to what most would call a "third world" country. There is no electricity, or telephone system, or any other modern creations which made life so much easier, all of it having been destroyed to make the humans understand how precious and easy their life really was.
Unfortunately for the humans, some of the rogue technology is still loose in certain areas. This has made the humans band together for protection, for comfort, and for survival. In addition, the humans have begun exhibiting certain powers and abilities that they never showed before. Powers that help them in the battles against the interlopers.
As is the case with all things, nothing can be created...nor can it be utterly destroyed. The magic that developed was not like a magician's, who could pull rabbits out of hats, but more like a manipulative ability. It developed in the people according to their personalities (i.e. Fiery temper, fire magic). One could have Fire, Earth, Air, or Water, but not more than one. They could manipulate their elements to help in their fight, but some magic took its toll very quickly. In order to improve endurance, one had to practice long and hard, but no one was extremely efficient. (See Rules for Magic)
Over time, humans pulled themselves together and regained good order on Terron. However, human nature began roaring its head, showing the humans' primitive nature. Greed, revenge, and fury made way as they sought to regain what they had thought they lost: The Technology. Hunters, Raiders, thieves and many more came with the main drive for the people and were glorified. However, massive controversy also came and many people liked the third world life, and didn't want the technology back because of it's track record of destruction. This causes common civil disorder in big and small scales. Some cities have even declared themselves separate, declaring to be machine friendly and try to sabotage the hunters works.
However, unknown to mankind, the technology continues to plot against humanity and is stirring on the desolate and barren continent Ople.
